The Apple iPhone 4S remains as popular as ever and continues to be one of the best selling smartphones on the market. However, it now faces more impressive competition than ever before thanks to the latest Android smartphones from a number of manufacturers including Samsung and HTC. Because of the impressive spec lists on the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC One X, devices like these now outsell in the likes of the iPhone 4S. In this article, I am going to take a closer look at some of the key features of the iPhone 4S and compare them to those of the latest Samsung and HTC flagships to find out why this is.
When choosing a new smartphone, the touchscreen is one of the most important features for many people. The iPhone 4S impresses in this respect thanks to its retina display which produces excellent display quality. This is partly down to the comparatively small measurements of the screen, measuring the same 3.5 inches as the screen on every other iPhone model to date. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has a 4.8 inch screen whereas the HTC One X has a 4.7 inch display, both of which have high definition resolutions. Therefore display quality is still very good, but also includes a larger screen which many people seem to favour these days.
An equally important, but often overlooked feature of smartphones is the processor. When the Apple iPhone 4S was released it had one of the best processors on the market at the time, the Apple A4 chip which is 1 GHz and dual-core. The Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC One X, being much newer smartphones have much more powerful processors. They some of the first smartphones on the market to include quad-core processors, making them among the most powerful smartphones in the world in terms of processing power. Obviously, this is preferable to a dual-core processor is this technology offers much better performance across all aspects of the handset's spec list.
Being an Apple product, the iPhone 4S of course runs iOS as its operating system of choice. This is well liked by millions of users thanks to its ease of use, simple layout and intuitive user interface. However, Android is rapidly gaining popularity over the last couple of years and is now the number one operating system on mobile devices. This is thanks largely to its high degree of customisation, widget functionality and ease of use combined with powerful features. The Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC One X utilise the latest version of this which is known as Ice Cream Sandwich.
While it is clear to see that the Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC One X offer many superior features to the Apple iPhone 4S, the latter still remains a popular choice. It is also worth mentioning that the iPhone 5 is due for release later this year, and it will be interesting to see if this measures up against the latest Android devices.
