Announced back in January and released in February, the Sony Xperia Z was the first high profile Android smartphone to be released in 2013. The device has proven to be one of the most successful handsets to date for the Japanese manufacturer, clocking up over 4 million sales and gaining widespread critical acclaim during its time on the market. The spec list of the Xperia Z is one of the most advanced of any smartphone on the market, and certainly Sony's most advanced to date. The phone boasts a 5 inch 1080p display, 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, 13.1 megapixel camera and Android Jellybean operating system. The phone is also set apart from the competition with its official IP55 and IP57 certifications, meaning the phone is both dust proof and waterproof. Black, white and purple colour variants of the handset are available, adding to its appealing aesthetics.

The Sony Xperia Z runs Android 4.1 Jellybean as its operating system, with an update to Android 4.2 recently confirmed for the near future. However, XperiaBlog has recently reported that another version of the Xperia Z may be on the way. A Google edition of the phone is reportedly in the works, and like the Google editions of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One, will run the stock Android interface and provides much earlier updates to future versions of the Android OS than handsets which are tied to a network.

However, the website reports that in order to gain faster Android updates, a number of Sony's features may be sacrificed, including the Bravia Engine, enhanced audio quality and some of its camera software features. Such a device would most likely appeal to Android purists, and unlikely to see the same demand as the current version. The website reports that the device is likely to be only available in the US, via the Google Play store.
