Tower Hamlets, London Borough of (London): Mini Market fined for cockroach infestation

The owner of a mini market in Poplar was fined more than £2,500 after Tower Hamlets Council discovered a serious cockroach infestation.

Ibrahim Ali, the owner of TSA Exotic Trade Centre Limited at 231 East India Dock Road pleaded guilty to five food hygiene offences on Friday 8 October at Thames Magistrates’ Court. He was fined £250 for each offence and forced to pay £1,250 in costs.

The infestation was discovered by the council’s Environmental Health Officers during a routine visit on 13 August 2009. The officers found a large number of cockroaches, cockroach eggs and droppings around the premises. The infestation was particularly bad in the butchery area around a display fridge containing uncovered raw meat.
