Anahita from Sweden arrived in Cairo, Egypt, in February 2013. She is a student of Arabic at AMBergh Education. At the age of 23, Anahita is a beginner of Arabic. Besides her course, Anahita is doing volunteer work with AMBergh’s partner organisation “Heya”, a prominent Egyptian NGO for women’s rights and empowerment.

“My first volunteer assignment is to create an information leaflet”, says Anahita. She will soon participate in Heya’s awareness-raising programme on women’s health and will also take part in an empowerment project for young female orphans.

“We are extremely happy that our students in Cairo get out in the Egyptian community, make contacts with the locals, learn about the social context, and contribute to this important work”, says AMBergh’s representative Viveka Bergh.

According to Yara El Razaz, Heya’s co-founder, “it is important to change people’s mindset to allow them to realize that by depriving half of our population of their basic rights we are depriving ourselves and our country of a better future” (Egyptian Streets). Heba, coordinator at Heya, is happy about Anahita’s contribution. “She's doing a great job! We still have more activities planned for her, so hopefully she'll enjoy the rest of her volunteering experience just as much.”

AMBergh wishes Anahita and Heya the best of luck!
