Triple Crown for Nurse Education

Nursing students have named Northumbria the UK’s Nurse Education Provider of the Year: Post-Registration for the third year running at the Student Nursing Times Awards 2014.

The award gives Northumbria’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes a clean bill of health, recognising the high-quality teaching the University provides nurses to develop their leadership, management and clinical skills.

Nominees for the award are put forward by students. Judges then speak with students at each nominated institution to assess their learning experience; gauging their views on teaching quality, the learning environment and student support.

Professor Kath McCourt, Executive Dean for Northumbria’s Health and Life Sciences programmes, received the award at the ceremony in London on Thursday, 1st May 2014.

Professor McCourt said: “Northumbria has a great track record for nurturing professional, high-quality nurses who are ready to meet the demands of modern healthcare and the needs of patients. To win this award not once or twice, but three times in a row is absolutely outstanding and reflects the hard work and dedication of all our nurse educators and students.”

Northumbria was nominated in nine categories overall, with student Nicola McCann also winning an award, being named Student Nurse of the Year: Post-registration at the ceremony.

Karen Giles, Director of Education and Quality at Health Education North East, was present at the ceremony. She said: “The North East was represented by many nominees at the awards – nine of which came from Northumbria alone. I’d like to congratulate all of the students and staff for their hard work and dedication. They are a real credit to their profession and deserve every success for the future.”
