Victims’ Commissioner to deliver Northumbria University Eldon Lecture

Northumbria University, Newcastle, is hosting a high-profile public lecture by leading community reform campaigner and activist Baroness Newlove.

Entitled “The Victims’ Code: Protection and Promotion of Victims’ Rights in the Criminal Justice System”, the lecture will be held at Northumbria Law School on Monday February 10 at 6.30pm.

Students, staff and interested members of the public are all invited to attend.

Baroness Newlove is the Victims’ Commissioner for England and Wales, and is recognised for her work tackling anti-social behaviour as well as the underage and binge drinking culture. In her role as Champion for Active Safer Communities, she produced a major report setting out priorities to help people make a difference to their neighbourhoods.

Monday’s presentation will be part of Northumbria’s Eldon Lectures, named after Lord Eldon, one of Newcastle’s most influential lawyers and a former Lord Chancellor. They take place in Northumbria Law School and showcase an array of influential speakers from across the legal profession.

Kevin Kerrigan, Executive Dean of Northumbria Law School, said: “The Code of Practice for Victims of Crime is a key part of the Government's criminal justice strategy, with an aim of making the system more responsive and easier to navigate for victims of crime. Baroness Newlove's lecture will offer a unique insight into this important area of legal policy and is an opportunity not to miss.”

Baroness Newlove is keen to promote the implementation of the Code, making sure victims have the right to read their Personal Statement in court and, where possible, not share the same waiting room as offenders prior to trial.

The lecture will be held in Lecture Theatre 002, Business and Law Building, City Campus East, Northumbria University, Newcastle. It starts at 6:30pm with a pre-lecture drinks reception from 6:00pm.
