2019 German Design Award for AC charging cables
The new generation of Type 2 AC charging cables from Phoenix Contact has received the 2019 German Design Award in the category “Special Mention”.
During the process to design the new product family in collaboration with professional designer Stephan Gahlow from Hamburg, a conscious effort was made to focus on achieving an ergonomic and attractive design along with using robust and top-quality materials. The objective here was to meet the tough requirements of the automotive industry.
The AC charging cable that was nominated proved convincing to the German Design Award jury: “The ergonomic design ensures the grip has a comfortable feel, which facilitates handling. A functionally well thought-out design that is also aesthetically impressive in its modern contouring and two-colour optics.” That was the rationale of the jury, which was composed of design experts from business, academia, and science, as well as the design industry
The German Design Award is the top international prize of the German Design Council. Its purpose is to discover, highlight, and reward unique design trends. Prizes are given out annually for entries from the product and communication design sectors that, each in their own way, break new ground in the international design landscape. Launched in 2012, the award is among the most recognised design competitions in the world and enjoys a strong reputation well beyond professional circles. It also places great demands on identifying its winners: In the nomination process, only products and communication design performances that clearly stand out for their design quality are invited to participate.
