Post Office continues to take on BT with ‘3 months free’ promotion

Post Office - already the best value provider in the market for home phone line rental – is offering 3 months free home phone line rental to new customers for the next fortnight. The promotion runs until 7th September.

Post Office is already the cheapest in the market for monthly line rental charges but this summer promotion reduces the cost even further. It’s £15 monthly line rental charge compares favourably to BT’s charge of £16.99 a month (BT will increase its line rental to £17.99 from 20th September) and Plusnet, which is currently £15.95 (Plusnet has announced this will rise to £16.99 from 2nd September). Post Office also offers the lowest UK day call rate in the market of 9.5p per min; cheaper than BT (10.24p per min) and Plusnet (10p per min). Post Office’s anytime call package offers the best value at £5.95 a month, compared to BT’s £7.95 a month. The Post Office also offers a longer free weekend call period, starting at 6pm on Friday and running to 6am on Monday, 12 hours more free call time than BT and Plusnet’s midnight Friday to midnight Sunday time period.

Around 2 million homes in the country currently choose to receive a home phone only rental package and Geoff Smyth, Head of Telecoms at the Post Office, says it is important that these customers are offered the best value possible; “Many people are paying a lot more for their line rental than they need to and this summer promotion ensures that customers are offered even better value.”

Under regulator Ofcom's rules, customers who take out a line rental, TV, broadband or mobile contract can cancel their contract penalty free, if a provider increases its prices during the contract. BT and Plusnet customers are currently being informed of rises, which come into effect in September; they then have thirty penalty free days (from the time they are informed of the price rise) to swap providers.

Mr Smyth also advises customers to be aware of additional charges, when considering overall prices; “The line rental is only one cost to bear in mind, when deciding on a line rental provider. It pays to do your homework, so you don’t end up paying more per month than you first realised”.

Post Office does not charge for paper bills or for its voicemail service. It also does not charge extra for non direct debit customers. BT, for example, charges £1.59 a month (£1.70 from 20th September) for paper billing, £1.80 a month to non- direct debit customers and £1.85 a month for its 1571 voicemail service.
