Floods affect six million in Nepal

Practical Action has been working in Nepal for many years. We are very concerned about heavy monsoons that hit the country last week and are monitoring the situation - especially its impact on the poorest and most vulnerable communities where we work.

The monsoons have affected 27 of the 75 districts, predominantly the plains. In some areas, rivers are flowing above the bridges and in many places highways are under water. A number of villages are under water and people have had to seek higher ground for shelter. The Government of Nepal has confirmed 91 fatalities, 35 people missing and 39 injured. Due to widespread water logging, 48,316 houses have been submerged and over six million people are affected.

All of our staff are safe, and we are working to determine the impact that this event has had on our current projects. We do not yet have complete information about our partners and beneficiaries. The government is working hard to fix the electricity supply, roads, bridges and telecommunications.

We will be posting regular updates on our social media feeds and website.

Practical Action is conducting an assessment at the moment to determine where and how we can best contribute to the response.
