The global advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) market has been forecast to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.4% over the next five years, increasing from a valuation of $15.89 billion at the start of 2013, to hit an industry value of $28.45 billion by 2018.
AMI systems are comprised of state-of-the-art electronic/digital hardware and software, which combine interval data measurement with continuously available remote communications. These systems enable measure¬ment of detailed, time-based information and frequent collection and transmittal of such information to various parties.
AMI typically refers to the full measurement and collection system that includes meters at the customer site, communication networks between the customer and a service provider, such as an electric, gas, or water utility, and data recep¬tion and management systems that make the information available to the service provider.
Regulatory mandates, the urge for energy conservation and grid modernisation initiatives drive the AMI market. AMI has taken Automated Meter Reading (AMR) one step further by improving customer engagement activities through two-way communication.
While smart meter deployments will save operational cost for utilities along with improved non-technical loss identification like theft/tamper detection and outage notification, AMI systems will also allow for consumer bill savings by means of Time of Use (TOU) billing.
AMI is one of the primary steps for smart grid optimisation. To understand the customer needs and to fulfil them in an effective manner, involvement of both consumer and utility companies is essential which has led to implementation of AMI.
Different federal and state governments are implementing AMI systems which not only reduce cost but also provide other benefits at customer and operational level such as more effective theft intrusion and detection, personalised tariff plans, improved service quality and easy bill options.
In terms of regions, Europe is expected to be the biggest market in terms of revenue contribution, while Asia-Pacific (APAC) is expected to experience increased market traction, through to 2018.
