Archbishop Anders Wejryd has expressed his regrets over the death of Pope Shenouda in a letter of condolence to the Coptic Church of Egypt. The Pope died after a period of illness on Saturday, 17 March.
Pope Shenouda III was the supreme spiritual leader of the Egyptian Copts. He will be buried on Tuesday, 20 March at St Bishoy monastery in Wadi el Natrun, 100 km outside of Cairo, where he lived for many years.
"We will remember the Pope as a remarkable leader who succeeded in maintaining unity within the church even in hard times," Archbishop Anders Wejryd wrote in his letter.
On Wednesday, the Coptic Church will be hosting a reception for those dignitaries wishing to expresses their condolences. The Church of Sweden is sending two representatives, Cajsa Sandgren and Göran Rask, to take part in the memorial service at the Coptic Orthodox Cultural Center in Abbasseya in Cairo.
