Austria beer market: Consumption increased during 2012

Press release   •   Aug 12, 2013 11:30 BST

Consumption in the Austria beer market increased in 2012. There was little change in market segmentation with lager retaining its commanding position. Radlers boosted the category as did the noticeable trend towards the individualization of beer consumption. People like to taste and enjoy different kinds of beers rather than drinking the same brand or even type of beer continuously.

Austria ranks second in the world for levels of per capita beer consumption, exceeded only by the Czech Republic and followed by Germany, Lithuania and Poland. Austria has a rich beer tradition. It holds one of the top positions in terms of per capita consumption and in terms of breweries per head of population.

Although Europe is only slowly recovering from the economic crisis, Austria remains as one of the best performing countries despite having unemployment rates at the highest they have been since World War II.

The biggest export country remains Italy, taking around 27% of Austria's beer exports and increasing by 6% in 2012
