The Canadian gardening market looks set to see a significant improvement on the past five years as the industry starts to work its way out of the recession of 2008-09.
The Canadian gardening industry has been forecast to achieve a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2% through to 2016, the reach total sales volume of C$5.2 billion.
The predominant factor contributing to the growth within the Canadian gardening market is the improvement in the economy, meaning Canadians are starting to steadily spend again as employment begins to strengthen and consumers become more comfortable with spending money on household- related items such as the garden.
From 2011 to 2021, between 3.3 million and 6 million people will be at the age of retirement and ideally suited for gardening. Baby boomers are expected to spend $2,400 a year on garden and garden-related activities and will have almost eight hours of daily leisure time at their disposal.
It has been estimated that baby boomers alone, between 2011 to 2021, will spend an additional $5.5 billion to $10.1 billion a year on ornamental horticultural at retail level
Key players within the Canadian gardening market include; Gardena Canada Ltd, one of the strongest brands amongst the international competitors in the gardening sector. Weber-Stephen Products Co, a manufacturer of charcoal and gas grills, grilling accessories and other outdoor room products, and The Scotts Co, the world's leading marketer of branded consumer lawn and garden products.
Premier Tech Home & Garden Inc is one of the only key Canadian manufacturers in the garden care segment which carries a number of products in growing media under fertilizer. However, this is a very rare example of a Canadian company having a strong presence in the category as the Canadian gardening market is dominated largely by international brands and manufacturers.
