Chinese dental market lagging far behind its developed counterparts

Press Release   •   Feb 06, 2013 15:16 GMT

In 2011, the Chinese dental market surged by 31.6% year-on-year to RMB2589.9 million, however, China currently lags far behind its developed counterparts in the dental equipment filed.

On the basis of dental care consumption, the dental industry is a medical industry chain integrating dental care service and the production and operation of dental care equipment and dental materials.

The dental equipment industry used to be rather undeveloped in China as neither government nor citizens paid much attention to dental health. There were only 10 enterprises generating revenue of $28.7 million in 1999.

From 2000 to 2010, however, the industry has had annualized revenue growth of 25.4%. In 2011, there were 52 enterprises generating $421.1 million. Improved living standards and greater emphasis on dental health have been the main drivers of industry development.

Dental chairs are a major product category in this industry. There are two main types of dental chairs: traditional (70.0%) and modern (30.0%). Traditional dental chairs are generally located in city and rural private dental clinics, and cost up to $1,200.

Modern, electric dental chairs incorporate more functions, such as height control, angle control and lighting, and can cost up to $8,500. Modern chairs have an emphasis on patient protection to avoid cross-infection, and will be an increasing future trend as health awareness increases.

Major homegrown industrial players include Northwest Medical Instrument, Runyes, Shinva Medical, Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical (Group), Meiya Optoelectronic Technology and Fujian Meisheng Medical Science & Technology.

Because the market is still relatively new, most of the demand for imported products comes from the top two cities of Shanghai and Beijing. However, several Tier II cities show good future potential including, Tianjin, Shenzhen, Nanjing and Xi'an.
