London, UK - 8 December 2015 – Some of Sweden’s most radiant stars promise to bring the northern lights to London’s Cadogan Hall on Wednesday 23 December with this year’s Christmas From Sweden concert. Back for a fourth time, the concert showcases one of Sweden’s most luminous operatic personalities, lyric soprano Miah Persson, together with the internationally established string ensemble Camerata Nordica lead by their charismatic Music Director, Terje Tønnesen, and introducing Torbjörn Westman on the traditional Swedish folk instrument nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle), as well as Nicholas Parle on harpsichord.
Born out of the 2004-2005 classical music festival 'From-Sweden', Christmas From Sweden aims to explore the musical common ground between Britain and Sweden, and bring Swedish classical music to a British audience. The concert programme will feature a mix of popular classical works and carols from Sweden, Britain and beyond, including:
The Star of Bethlehem
Intermezzo from A Winter’s Tale
Nu är det Jul igen
Sofie Haag, Executive Producer and Founder of From Sweden Productions, said: “We are delighted to bring Christmas From Sweden back to London and offer the public a chance to enjoy some of Sweden´s most talented classical musicians. In close collaboration with the artists, our Artistic Director Sofia Nyblom has done a wonderful job presenting a programme which reflects our nation's rich musical heritage mixed with seasonal music from different parts of the world. It is sure to spread warmth and joy to the audience on the magical night before Christmas Eve."
Christmas Eve – not Christmas Day – holds pride of place in Sweden’s festive calendar, so the 23rd of December, Lillejulafton (‘Little Christmas Eve’), is always filled with excitement, anticipation and magic – as the audience at Cadogan Hall is about to discover.
Swedish soprano Miah Persson resides in London and is in great demand with the major opera houses and orchestras around the world. In 2011 she was appointed the prestigious title Hovsångerska (Court Singer) by H.M King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden. Critics repeatedly praise her charm, elegance, insightful musicality and flawless voice. She has appeared in most of the world’s leading opera houses including the Paris Opera, Vienna State opera, Metropolitan Opera New York, and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. In January 2015, she made her debut at Teatro alla Scala, Milan, in Robert Wilson’s staging of Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea.
Camerata Nordica, one of Europe’s leading chamber ensembles, comprises 15-20 leading international string players. The orchestra, which has been called ‘sensational’ and ‘outstanding’ by critics, performs without a conductor, standing in a half-circle formation. Last year, the ensemble coordinated the international project Emerging Classical Talent in the EU. They have toured the United States no less than eight times. Their critically acclaimed BBC Proms debut in 2013 at Cadogan Hall, featured the world premiere of Benjamin Britten’s Elegy for Strings. Camerata Nordica has since released several critically acclaimed albums the BIS label.
