Curvaceous Software awarded UK Government R&D Grant

Press Release   •   Feb 16, 2010 12:16 GMT

Curvaceous Software Limited (Curvaceous), the award-winning British technology company, has been awarded a Development Grant from the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) to focus on the management and control of alarm floods.

The grant was awarded to Curvaceous by Finance South East, on behalf of SEEDA, following a rigorous appraisal process against criteria including the level of technological advance and risk.

Curvaceous’ current research work is based on its innovative Geometric Process Control (GPC) technology and software products. These include the unique Visual Explorer, the only programme that lets the user view hundreds of process variables and their alarm limits in a single graph, and Process Modeller, which is the only programme that lets you view the Operating Envelope of a process and your ‘you-are-here’ position in real-time.

The Curvaceous research team will utilise GPC’s capabilities to develop new techniques to eliminate alarm floods and provide the plant operator with what they need in an emergency – namely the annunciation of only the most significant alarms at a rate they can handle.

Robin Brooks, Managing Director of Curvaceous Software said: “We’re delighted to receive this research grant from SEEDA, which recognises our unique specialism in alarm management and control. Our first project led to several patents and formed the foundation of our Company’s success. We won the EPSC Award for the invention of Consistent Alarms in 2003 and we have every belief that our current research work will prove just as ground-breaking. Our aim is to transform alarm systems so that they are truly valued, useful when most needed and most importantly, contribute to solving the problem instead of becoming the distraction that they so often are today.”

Curvaceous recently launched Visual Explorer 2.5 and enhancements to Process Modeller that deliver Consistent HiLo Alarm Limits & Alerts starting from the behavioural information buried in process history data rather than alarm log data.

Measurable economic benefits include minimum time savings of 20% to perform Alarm Review Meetings and a reduction in engineering time for on-going change management. However, the most impressive benefits are delivered by safer and better-managed processes where alarms and alerts contribute to the achievement of business objectives.

About The Grant for Research & Development

Finance South East delivers two business grants on behalf of SEEDA – the Grant for Business Investment (GBI) and Grant for Research & Development.  The Grant for Research and Development is a Business Support product of the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). Its aim is to support start-ups and SMEs to carry out research and development work on technologically innovative products and processes. The Grant for Research & Development is focused on encouraging businesses to carry out projects that they would not necessarily undertake without the grant, and could help to lever in to these projects finance from reluctant private investment sources.
