Today, following an open competition the Department for Work and Pensions awarded their IT Desktop Services Contract to Fujitsu. The new contract starts on 1 September 2010 following a phased take on.
Joe Harley, DWP IT Director General & Chief Information Officer said “This is the first in a series of competitions to replace our existing IT and telephony services contracts by 2015 and it sets the tone by delivering significant benefits for the Department and as a framework for Government wide IT. As well as delivering significant savings it will further transform DWP’s desktop estate with the proposed use of ‘thin client’ desktop technology. This provides a number of benefits, including little or no maintenance required to the kit and reductions in power consumption which supports our sustainability agenda.”
The DWP has worked closely with Buying Solutions, an Executive Agency of the Office for Government Commerce, delivering a new model of collaboration for Government, leveraging the DWP’s IT knowledge and experience to develop a standardised set of service requirements. This has resulted in a Framework Agreement for Buying Solution’s public sector customers.
The DWP Desktop Services competition is part of the Department’s contracting strategy announced on 1 July 2008, which will see all of its IT Services competed for by 2015. Along with the Application Deployment services competition launched last year, this means that about 50% of DWP’s IT has been opened to competition.

Three suppliers were shortlisted for the final stage of this competition: Cap Gemini, Fujitsu and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Systems. `
1. The new contract will further transform the DWP’s desktop estate with the proposed use of thin client desktop technology, which will provide a number of additional benefits including: improved data security; little or no maintenance required to the kit; and reduction in power consumption which supports the sustainability agenda.
2. The DWP contract with Fujitsu will enable the Department to continue making significant savings in its desktop costs, a trend it established in 2005.
3. The competition supports the Government’s Operational Efficiency Programme and takes account of market trends, Departmental business needs and affordability constraints. In addition it supports the Government’s ICT and ICT Procurement Strategies, in particular aiming to support the collaborative procurement and standard services agendas.
4. The Department’s contracting strategy was announced in July 2008.
5. The Desktop Services competition was launched in September 2008.
