The following statistics were released today by the Department of Health:

Bed Availability and Occupancy - Quarter ending 30th September 2010:

The KH03 is a Quarterly collection from all NHS organisations that operate beds, ordinary or daycase, both NHS Trusts and PCTs. It collects the total number of available bed days and the total number of occupied bed days by consultant main specialty. Main findings are:

* The average daily number of beds open overnight changed from 140,094 in Quarter 1 2010/11 to 140,083 in Quarter 2 2010/11.

* The average occupancy rate for all beds open overnight was 84.2% in Quarter 2 2010/11 compared with 84.9% in Quarter 1 2010/11.

* The average daily number of general and acute beds open overnight was 106,731 in Quarter 2 2010/11 compared with 107,425 in Quarter 1 2010/11.

* The average occupancy rate for general and acute beds open overnight was 85.4% in Quarter 2 2010/11 compared with 86.3% in Quarter 1 2010/11.

* The average daily number of day only beds increased from 11,498 in Quarter 1 2010/11 to 11,949 in Quarter 2 2010/11.
