The following statistics were released today by the Department of Health:

Bed Availability and Occupancy – Quarter ending 31st December 2010:

The KH03 is a Quarterly collection from all NHS organisations that operate beds, ordinary or daycase, both NHS Trusts and PCTs. It collects the total number of available bed days and the total number of occupied bed days by consultant main specialty. Main findings are:

  • The average daily number of beds open overnight was 139,733 in Quarter 3 2010/11 compared with 139,685 in Quarter 2 2010/11.
  • The average occupancy rate for all beds open overnight was 85.8% in Quarter 3 2010/11 compared with 84.2% in Quarter 2 2010/11.
  • The average daily number of general and acute beds open overnight was 106,279 in Quarter 3 2010/11 compared with 106,731 in Quarter 2 2010/11.
  • The average occupancy rate for general and acute beds open overnight was 87.6% in Quarter 3 2010/11 compared with 85.5% in Quarter 2 2010/11.
  • The average daily number of day only beds was 10,794 in Quarter 3 2010/11 compared with 10,822 in Quarter 2 2010/11.
