Descente and Goldwin leading the Japanese athletic apparel sector

The Japanese athletic apparel market has been forecast to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.4% over the next four years, to hit a market value of $8 billion by the end of 2017.

The industry is set to be driven by a number of key factors including a growth in consumer interest in health and fitness, and the introduction of new designs by companies in footwear categories.

Japan's economy underwent drastic changes over the past few years due to several catastrophic events such as the tsunami, earthquakes and nuclear disasters which adversely affected outputs within the industry and dampened consumer confidence in the economy.

Although Japan's economy rebounded in 2011 with industrial output recovering along with the government introducing generous public reconstruction programmes, a strengthened yen weakened exports leading to a constrained private investment, which in turn lead to a contraction of overall GDP of the country.

The plummeted consumer spending has led to a fall in the revenue generated by athletic apparel market in Japan over the last few years.

Within the entire sports apparel market, sportswear for outdoors, track & field, and running obtained a positive growth, those for soccer and basketball stayed at the same level, and those for all other categories fell from the previous year.

Japan's athletic apparel market is majorly held by training wear, golf wear, outdoor wear and lifestyle wear, accounting for a significant portion of overall market revenue in 2012. In the athletic footwear market, multipurpose footwear, running footwear and walking footwear accounted for majority of the revenues over the last few years.

The Japanese athletic apparel market is concentrated with the presence of several large scale and small scale manufacturers, retailers and wholesalers. The market in 2011 was led by the domestic player Descente and the second largest player in the athletic apparel market in Japan was Goldwin.
