Two men who grew up together as best friends in Yorkshire but lost touch when they joined the army have been reunited after half a century by FinderMonkey.co.uk, the people finder experts who find old friends and family for the public.
Barry Thackeray and his friend, Francis Stephens grew up round the corner from each other in a working class area of Leeds and were schoolmates before they both took their first job at the same company.
The friends were renowned for following in each other’s footsteps so friends and relatives showed little surprise when they both took the decision to join the army in 1959.
However, it was a move that led to them being separated for more than 50 years after one was posted to Germany and the other to Malaysia.
“I’d always wondered what happened to my pal and I’d tried to find out but the trail always went cold,” said Barry.
It wasn’t until a relative told him about a website that specialised in tracing people that Barry decided to make one last attempt to trace his old friend.
Ryan Shaw, of Leeds-based FinderMonkey, said it took his team less than a week to track down Barry’s former schoolmate.
“It’s not unusual for people to presume that if it’s been a long time or they have very few details to go on we won’t be able to find who they’re looking for but more often than not we can trace people within a matter of days,” said Ryan.
He said the FinderMonkey.co.uk team regularly track down long lost relatives, old friends, and childhood sweethearts.
“We’ve reunited brothers and sisters, fathers and sons and are experts at helping people find old friends, often with few details to go on and when they have almost given up hope of ever seeing each other again.”
