DPI market led by Allot Communications

Press Release   •   Jul 24, 2013 14:27 BST

The DPI market (Deep Packet Inspection) has been forecast to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 35% through to 2016, driven by the increase in bandwidth usage, and the combined use of both standalone and integrated DPI.

Over the last few years, high penetration of sophisticated devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablets into the market has resulted in a surge in network traffic.

Apart from the rapidly increasing demand for quality of service (QoS), bandwidth as well as speed, there is also an increase in the number of security risks associated with the cyber world.

These dynamic security risks pose major threats for individuals, governments and enterprises across the globe. One way of dealing with these threats, is the use of Deep Packet Inspection (DPI). DPI is a technology that monitors the payload content of IP packets being transmitted across a network.

The payload contains the application layer data i.e. the actual user data that is being transmitted. In a nutshell, what DPI does is to provide network visibility and maintains the security and integrity of networks.

The influence of DPI technology is increasing in the network environment of service providers. They are integrating DPI technology in their network equipment.

Service providers are using standalone DPI products for the core of the network and integrated DPI solutions for their access points to get maximum benefit from both types of DPI technology. Thus, network operators are using both types of DPI solutions for better network management.

Allot Communications currently dominates the DPI market, due to an increase in sales to the Americas and boosted revenue from Asia Pacific. In addition to being the overall market share leader, Allot is also named as the clear the leader in the mobile DPI market and the wireless DPI segment, which has been forecasted by to grow at a CAGR of 33% by 2017.

Allot's assertive approach is paying dividends, both in terms of market leadership and as the early mover in consolidating video under the DPI umbrella. As data usage over mobile networks continues to rise, operators are adopting solutions that not only manage the increased traffic, but include specialised capabilities like video optimisation, content caching, and usage-based billing.
