eMMC market driven by the spiraling sales of mobile devices

Press Release   •   Jun 11, 2013 10:31 BST

The embedded multimedia card (eMMC) market has been forecast to hit 927.1 million units by 2018, driven by the spiraling sales of mobile devices and increasing data consumption.

Growth will also be led by technology benefits like efficient management and optimisation of memory and lower costs compared to conventional NAND flash memory.

eMMC describes an architecture consisting of an embedded storage solution with MMC interface (version 4.1/4.2, MMCplus), flash memory and controller, all in a small ball grid array (BGA) package.

Capable of providing ultra-fast memory, Embedded Multimedia Cards (eMMCs) are rapidly being deployed in mobile computing devices like Android based tablets, smartphones, digital book readers, digital cameras, navigation devices and portable terminals, among others.

Developments in embedded system technologies have been largely instrumental in enabling the eMMC memory architecture to be directly mounted onto the circuit board.

Growing sales of smartphones is expected to benefit the market for eMMC. Factors such as ubiquity of mobile Internet, capabilities such as advanced messaging, email, web browsing, navigation, data streaming, and faster 3G/4G networks are creating the need for higher memory densities in smartphones.

As the amount of data downloaded and stored increases, demand for eMMC is poised to grow given its superior memory management capabilities. Benefits such as, low cost advanced memory capabilities, longer battery life, and a simpler design structure capable of reducing production costs, are fostering eMMC adoption in smartphones and tablets.

Manufacturers have already begun incorporating 16GB/32GB/64GB eMMC in high-end smartphones and development is underway to accommodate eMMC on mid-range and low-end smartphones as well.

Asia-Pacific represents the largest as well as the fastest growing regional market with a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 28.4% through to 2018. Growth in the region is led by strong economic growth, rising income levels, continuous development of cellular markets, rising 3G penetration, and spiralling sales of smartphones and tablets.
