London, UK: 11 February 2014 – Valentine’s Day is becoming an increasingly last minute affair for time-strapped Brits. Expedia.co.uk, part of the world’s largest online travel agent, revealed today that just half of Brits plan to celebrate Valentine’s day this year. Of those, 63% will leave a week or less to plan their romantic outings. 35% of Brits would leave making arrangements till 3-7 days before with a third (29%) leaving planning till 0-2 days before.
With shorter lead times, practicality is key as planning and ease of booking (28%) and value for money (26%) are cited as important considerations for Brits selecting romantic settings in which to celebrate.
The younger generation appear to be leading the romantic charge when it comes to Valentine’s Day 2014 with nearly 2/5 (37%) of 18-34 year olds responding that organising the perfect romantic setting is their biggest factor in planning for Valentine’s. For this generation Valentine’s is just as much about doing something different as an excuse to be romantic. For the 45-54 year old age group, whilst Valentine’s is a rare excuse to be romantic – budget is the prime concern in their planning with nearly a third saying they are looking to keep it cheap this year.
Overseas, the French and Italians, known for being traditionally more romantic, have been shown to spend more on Valentine’s Day than the British. The average French person is planning on spending £76.18 this Valentine’s Day compared with £49.36 for the British average. The Italians lead on spending for Valentine’s Day, with the average Italian person is planning on spending £77.47compared with £49.36 for the British average.
