London, UK: 06 February 2014 –  Expedia.co.uk, part of the world’s largest online travel agent, revealed today that the number of Brits travelling to Ireland during St. Valentine’s Day weekend this year has doubled compared to the same time period in 2013. Ireland is the second highest growth destination for Brits this Valentine’s Day, with bookings up 115%, trumped only by the exotic allure of Marrakech (128%).

In fact, Dublin proved even more popular for Valentine’s bookings among romance-seeking Brits than the quintessentially romantic cities of Rome, Venice and Barcelona this year.

Closer to home, Birmingham, which saw an increase in bookings on Expedia.co.uk for the Christmas holiday season, is also seeing a rise in travel over Valentine’s Day. It’s up 80% compared to last year’s Valentine’s weekend - just outside of the top 10 destinations.

“Valentine’s Day is always a popular time for couples to get away and we’re seeing Brits looking at new alternative destinations – both at home and abroad. The warmth and mystique of Marrakech makes it increasingly appealing as a short haul destination where you can still feel a world away from home. For those looking to stay in the UK, London remains the UK’s most alluring city, whilst home-grown romance destinations like Edinburgh and Glasgow showing increases of more than 25%, and Cardiff appearing in the top 20 list for Valentine’s”, said Andy Washington, Managing Director of Expedia.co.uk. “It’s never too late to plan something romantic, and for those looking for a subtle way to find last minute deals the Expedia mobile app is the ideal solution.”

For those not already in love, a Valentine’s weekend getaway could be the perfect way to find it. Expedia’s research revealed that more than half (52%) of Brits believe they’re more likely to find love on holidays than at home.
