Fancy Dress Industry Shows Clowns Are Becoming Renowned For Their Evil Side

Press Release   •   Nov 08, 2010 16:12 GMT

Whilst looking at the popular search terms for Halloween this year I came across all the usual keywords and phrases I would expect to see at the scariest time of the year for fancy dress fans like “zombie”, “vampire”, “devil” and “witch”. With girls not always wanting to look terrifying and ugly at Halloween the search of “sexy” also did not surprise me.

What did surprise me though is just under “Halloween” in the number 1 spot was the keyword “clown”. With many people suffering from or claiming to suffer from coulrophobia, the fear of clowns, the clown may be becoming more of a unnerving character than one known for comedy and entertainment. With a fine selection of scary clowns on the market as well as normal circus clowns perhaps there is a wider variety of this particular costume to choose from than most.

Looking back at May 2010 the “clown” was still a very popular keyword and remained 12th in the most popular search terms over a 5 day period. The difference in search volume for the term “clown” from mid October compared with mid May is over 3500 searches in favour of October which suggests that clowns are now seen as a costume more than suitable for a Halloween party.

To back this up I have also compared the phrase “cheerleader”, a phrase that is not as popular as “clown” but is a regular feature in the top 30 phrases throughout the year. The difference in searches over exactly the same periods is much less with only an increase by around 400 at Halloween when traffic to the site is at its highest.

So is the clown now becoming renowned for it’s evil side rather than the comedic, jocular entertainer it was back in the 80’s and 90’s? The fancy dress industry would suggest it is.
