The global femtocells and small cells market is set to report strong growth over the period 2013 to 2019 as operators and network providers seek ways of improving indoor data capacities, manage the increased demand on existing networks and move some of the traffic away from the centralised networks and towards localised provision.
Over the last few years, there has been a lot of excitement about femtocells technology within the mobile industry as a real solution to improving data management capacity on networks to improve service levels whilst also removing some traffic demand from the macro networks. Femtocells hold the promise of reducing churn by improving indoor coverage and saving costs at the same time by offloading the macro radio network. However, as the initial set of femtocells networks have been implemented and fed back into the market it has been highlighted a number of key technical, standards, business care and regulatory challenges that still need to be addressed if femtocells are really going to take off within the consumer market.
The relative high cost to implement femtocells networks combined with the consumer attitude that in-building coverage should be covered by the operators themselves has dampened potential growth in the market sector. However, the real need for increased network performance particularly indoors is only growing as smartphones become the dominant mobile device. The industry is now looking into this technology as a potential solution to their network capacity issues.
The global market for small cells and femtocells is forecast to total US$5.98 billion by the end of 2019 as the market reports strong growth during the next six years. By the end of 2012, the femtocells and small cells market was only valued at US$420 million although as increased pressure to improve data coverage indoors and to improve data capacity with existing networks, the femtocells market is set to grow rapidly.
