French allergy remedies market driven by the rise in air pollution levels

Press release   •   Aug 14, 2013 09:35 BST

The French allergy remedies market increased by a negligible amount in current value terms in 2012, to reach €550 million, due to a quasi-absence of the flu virus and relatively warmer temperatures in the winter.

According to INSERM (Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale - National Institute for Health and Medical Research), about 25% of the French population suffered from hay fever or other allergies in 2012, and its frequency almost doubled in the last decade.

The main trigger (at 75%) for rhinitis allergies is the pollen count, and the total pollen index in France remained at a high level of almost 2.4 million (according to the National Network for Aerobiology Monitoring), mainly due to the favourable climatic conditions and high pollution levels.

All in all, the increase in hay fever and other allergies generated growth of 5% in current value terms for antihistamines/allergy remedies in 2012.

Except for the peak of the influenza epidemic in late February until end of March 2012, cold and cough pathologies were relatively low in France throughout 2012. A warmer winter season and a cautious population helped to mitigate the flu season, with lower demand for OTC cold and cough products.

An attitude of prevention is better than cure continued to prevail in France, with large numbers of consumers opting for preventive measures such as boosting the consumption of vitamin C, as well as products which reinforce the immune-defence system, such as the homeopathic product Oscillococcinum or the herbal/traditional Elixir du Suédois Bio, before the arrival of the winter season.

Allergy remedies are expected to remain with a positive constant value compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2% over the next five years, as the proportion of the population suffering from allergies is expected to increase due to changing climatic conditions and an increase in air pollution levels.
