The global epichlorohydrin market, which hit a consumption level of over 1,520 kilo tons in 2012, has been forecast to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.8% over the next five years, driven by the increase in demand for epichlorohydrin in China, and growing end-user segments such as the paint and electronics industries.
Epichlorohydrin (ECH) is an organochlorine compound and an epoxide. It is a colourless liquid with a pungent, garlic-like odour, moderately soluble in water, but miscible with most polar organic solvents.
Epichlorohydrin is a highly reactive compound and is used in the production of glycerol, plastics, epoxy glues and resins, and elastomers. In contact with water, epichlorohydrin hydrolyzes to 3-MCPD, a carcinogen found in food.
Epichlorohydrin is an important commercial chemical, with a global annual demand of well over one million tons. Primary commercial applications are in the production of epoxy resins, elastomers, and synthetic glycerol.
Glycerol production has been on the decline as byproduct glycerol from soap production and biodiesel have been able to meet most demand.
Most of the companies are the captive producers of Epichlorohydrin and utilise entire ECH produced for epoxy resin manufacturing. Top players such as Dow Chemical Company (US), Formosa Plastics, and Momentive Performance Materials Inc. are captive producers of Epichlorohydrin.
Highest growth can be seen in China where most of the companies either have already established or planning to set up their manufacturing plants.
Growing domestic markets of Asia-Pacific region, low cost of raw material and labour are attracting companies towards China. By 2017, China will become the largest producer as well as exporter of Epichlorohydrin.
