In 2011, some 4.2 trillion units of retail packaging were sold across FMCG markets globally. The global food packaging market is by far the largest retail industry for packaging with 1.8 trillion units, or a 43% volume share.
Packaged food is also a promising industry for packaging in the forecast period with the second highest growth rate, at 3%. Demographic growth remains the key factor behind these prospects, with volume sales of packaged food due to increase by a CAGR of 2% between 2011 and 2016, to 633 million tonnes.
Beverages and tobacco are also significant markets for packaging, with each representing 1 trillion units in 2012. While tobacco packaging growth remains low due to a declining population of smokers and reduced tobacco consumption in developed regions, the beverage industry bodes well for packaging units sales, with a forecast CAGR of 4%.
Although much smaller in volume terms, beauty and personal care holds good opportunities for packaging volumes and innovation.
