The total volume of global LTE subscriptions totalled 130 million in the fourth quarter of 2013. LTE adoption gained momentum in 2013 and the United States operators of Verizon Wireless and AT&T dominate the global market. In 2013, both these companies accounted for 37% market share of the global LTE industry. The Japanese and Korean operators, NTT DoCoMo, KDDI, SoftBank, LG Uplus, SK Telecom and KT, accounted for 38% of the total LTE subscriptions worldwide.
By 2020, the LTE market will account for an estimated 20% of all mobile connections with the market forecast to report bullish growth of 56% CAGR during the period 2013 to 2020. In terms of the market leaders, Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia Siemens Networks and Alcatel Lucent accounted for 85% of all LTE contracts in 2013. Ericisson is also leading the market from a technology neutral perspective with a 24% share of all global 2G / 3G / 4G contracts.
The world’s largest LTE operator is currently Verizon Wireless with the company launching its first next-generation network at the end of 2010. Verizon Wireless now has live LTE networks in 337 regional markets covering 75% of the US population. By the second quarter of 2012, Verizon Wireless had surpassed a cumulative total of 10 million LTE devices.
Verizon Wireless’s main rival in the global LTE market is AT&T which launched its network in September 2011. The company is currently live in 47 markets and claims its 4G branded network covers 260 million of the United States population.
