Global Wi-Fi market to increase at a CAGR of 15%

Press Release   •   Jun 13, 2013 14:49 BST

The global Wi-Fi market has been forecast to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.08% over the next five years, rising from a valuation of $40.13 billion at the beginning in 2013, to hit a market value of $93.23 billion by 2018.

Wi-Fi is a popular technology that allows an electronic device to exchange data wirelessly (using radio waves) over a computer network, including high-speed Internet connections.

A device that can use Wi-Fi (such as a personal computer, video-game console, smartphone, digital camera, tablet or digital audio player) can connect to a network resource such as the Internet via a wireless network access point.

Such an access point (or hotspot) has a range of about 20 meters (65 feet) indoors and a greater range outdoors. Hotspot coverage can comprise an area as small as a single room with walls that block radio waves or as large as many square miles -- this is achieved by using multiple overlapping access points.

The need for ubiquitous data connectivity has been ever growing in the current business world and this demand doesn't look set to diminish any time soon. Among all the new technologies and standards that are built to meet this enormous demand, Wi-Fi is the most mainstream technology.

The technology has undergone a variety of transitions and is still growing across the globe. The Wi-Fi market is also has been driven by the shift into 5GHz and 60GHz bands enabling multiple user configurations.

The massive growth in the number of Wi-Fi enabled devices has made the network service providers and Wi-Fi product manufacturers to continuously innovate to meet customer demands.

While all world regions are experiencing robust demand for Wi-Fi services, Asia Pacific, especially China, Indonesia and India, will be the strongest drivers of growth through 2017.

Key players currently dominating the global Wi-Fi market include Cisco with a 50% share, others (23%), Aruba (11.2%), HP (6.3%), Ruckus (5.5%), and Motorola Solutions (4.1%).
