Global vaccines market led by GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer

Press Release   •   Oct 18, 2012 10:25 BST

The vaccines market continued to be one of the brighter spots for pharmaceutical companies in the current market, and revenues for vaccine products are expected to continue their double-digit growth in the future.

Driving that growth is an increasing acceptance of adult vaccines and the public health focus on flu prevention, as well as introductions of new vaccines. Improved production techniques will also play a role in enabling the products to come to market.

Most vaccine revenues are earned by five companies: Sanofi Pasteur, GlaxoSmithKline, Merck & Co., Pfizer, and Novartis. They held nearly 80% of the market as of 2010. All of these companies have seen growth in their vaccine business.

In 2010, Sanofi Aventis subsidiary Sanofi Pasteur was the leading manufacturer with 22.2% share and more than $5.6B in sales. The company's position was largely due to its influenza products, although its polio/pertussis/Hib products also account for a significant portion of its vaccine sales.

As of 2011 the most notable profits were seen by the US as they recorded the largest share across the globe. The US will continue to lead the global vaccine market and grow as much as 5.3% each year until 2018, with the potential to reach $17.4 billion.

However, it has been anticipated a sizeable shift will be seen in the industry, as the most promising future growth opportunities for the production and sale of vaccines come from emerging economies such as India and China.

India's vaccines market is forecast to climb from a 2011 value of $350 million to be worth$871 million in 2016, exhibiting an extremely healthy compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20%.

The second most populous country in the world has emerged as a major vaccine producer in recent years, focusing efforts on geographical regions where vaccines are not funded by the UN or charitable organisations. As a result, exports constituted 65% of the Indian vaccines market last year.
