HTC at MWC 2012

Press Release  •  Feb 29, 2012 11:00 GMT

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) has got off to a flying start this week in Barcelona and Taiwanese manufacturer HTC has been first out of the blocks, with a number of flagship handset announcements.

It looks like it has stuck to its promise of creating a more focused range of smartphones for 2012, after a year in which its oversaturation of the market began to take its toll on sales and profits.

The HTC One X will be the firm's premier Android 4.0 smartphone this year and it is finally confirmed as featuring Nvidia's new quad-core Tegra 3 processor, which will be running at 1.5GHz.

A 4.7 inch Super LCD display with a 720p HD resolution and a Gorilla Glass protective frontage will give One X users plenty of space to see Android 4.0 at its best. It may not be a Super AMOLED panel but it is arguably the next best thing.

Unlike previous high end handsets from HTC, the One X will not have an aluminium unibody chassis and is instead clad in a polycarbon shell similar to that found on the Nokia Lumia 800.

Beats Audio technology should give the One X some serious aural prowess and it should be available to buy in the UK from April, with both Orange and Vodafone confirming that they will offer it on contract.

The HTC One V is another model announced at MWC and it will be a far more affordable and modest affair than the One X. A single core 1GHz chip will throb within, while a 3.7 inch touchscreen display, Android 4.0 and yet more Beats Audio integration will round out the package.

With a slightly pronounced lower lip, the One V resembles the fan favourite HTC Hero and should help the company make more progress in the middle of the smartphone market this year.

The HTC One S sits between these previous two handsets, packing a 1.5GHz dual core processor which puts it in the same league as the Sensation XE. Fans of AMOLED technology will be pleased to hear that the One S features a 4.3 inch screen that uses this type of panel and, as such, it will be going toe to toe with the Samsung Galaxy S2, perhaps tipping the balance in favour of HTC, thanks to the now ubiquitous Beats Audio branding and sleek design inside and out.
