This Fall, Apple will launch the iOS 6. Sadly, iPhone 4 users won’t be able to access Maps turn by turn directions or use Flyover in its new Maps application. This functionality is limited to the iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and the third generation iPad.
It is said that both the iPhone 4 and 3GS lacks the ability to show turn by turn navigation or even show the new Flyover feature in iOS 6 Maps. It is strange because both of these handsets are compatible with the iOS 6.
This information came from Apple’s official website previewing Maps in its latest OS the iOS 6. A footnote stated that the Flyover and turn by turn navigation features are only available on the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. It also states that there are some features that may not be available in all countries or all areas.
In addition, Siri’s functionality is also limited to devices that offer Apple’s voice-driven software. Today, only the iPhone 4S comes with Siri. But the 3rd generation iPad will also receive this with the launch of the iOS 6.
One of the biggest features of the new native Maps application found in the iOS 6 is the turn by turn navigation. This feature is created from scratch by Apple as they no longer use Google Maps. It includes spoken directions, 3D view, and even real-time traffic information. Apple says that “as you approach a turn, Maps speaks directions, so you can keep your eyes on the road”. “In addition, the screen turns to 3D perspective view of the road ahead. Large signs and arrows superimposed over the image show you which way to go and how long it’s going to take to get there – even if your screen is locked.”
Again, only the newest hardware will receive full access to the new Flyover feature, this utilized advanced 3D mapping data. Added to this, Flyover will only be available in cities where there are 3D models. It offers detailed recreations rendered in real-time.
