Food and drink - the UK's largest manufacturing industry - will be showcasing its potential for growth at a series of events and an exhibition at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills in Victoria Street over the coming fortnight (14-25th November).
Organised by the Food and Drink Federation, which represents over 400 companies from global brands to SMEs, the showcase will highlight key messages about the industry including its £72.3billion annual turnover, potential for offering high quality, skilled employment and its contribution to the UK economy both at home and in the ever increasing export market.
The fortnight of activities will include product tastings from member companies including Coca Cola Great Britain, Kraft Foods, Nestlé, General Mills, Vimto and apetito; competitions and give-aways; and 'fringe events' which will include a careers seminar to promote the industry's drive to recruit the next generation of engineers and scientists.
Minister for Business and Enterprise, Mark Prisk will be visiting the showcase on Monday 21st November. Speaking ahead of the visit he said: “Food and drink is the UK's largest manufacturing industry, accounting for £72.3billion of UK turnover and directly employing over 400,000 people. This showcase reflects the scale of the work that is being carried out by the industry to really grow its potential and maintain the UK's position as a world leader in innovation, safety and sustainability in food production.
FDF's Director of Communications Terry Jones said: “We are delighted to be able to showcase our industry to an expected 4000 visitors over the fortnight. Food and drink is something that we probably take for granted but when people see the research and development and the innovation that goes into creating our best known brands they are usually amazed. This also gives us the chance to really communicate the strength of our industry and potential for further growth and contribution to the economy.”
