SGH Martineau is strengthening its Dispute Resolution Group (DRG) with the appointment of new partner Richard Ellison to the firm’s Professional Negligence team.
Richard brings with him more than 20 years experience of mortgage related and general banking litigation with extensive experience in professional negligence, fraud, undue influence, PPI, Breach of Mandate and Defended Guarantees. He is also well versed in alternative disputes resolution and in particular mediation.
Working with clearing banks, overseas-based banks, building societies, specialist mortgage lenders and other financial institutions, Richard joins SGH Martineau from Shoosmiths where he was Head of the Mortgage Litigation Team. Prior to Shoosmiths, Richard launched the Finance Litigation practice at Wragge & Co.
Richard’s appointment is a strategic move by the firm to strengthen the Birmingham arm of the firm’s DRG team, co-led by partners Andrew Adams and David Bailey, who also runs the firm’s Finance & Services to Lenders Group.
“It’s an exciting time to be joining SGH Martineau,” comments Richard. “Post merger, there is a significant opportunity to grow the DRG in Birmingham to ensure the firm remains one of the sector’s key players.
“In terms of the market, the timing is perfect. There are signs that the sector is about to evolve which is a positive move. While cost has been the focus of the market for some time now, it can be at the expense of quality which has become a serious issue for law firms. However, this trend looks set to reverse; a change probably led by the smaller lenders who have been the first to recognise the issue and its consequences, and act accordingly to put things right.
“I’m confident that the next few years will reveal opportunities for highly experienced DRG lawyers with a strong track record and the right contacts to really make an impact – again especially with smaller lenders where legal experts have access to the key decision-makers and so can help build the best legal strategies for successful outcomes.”
SGH Martineau’s Managing Partner, Bill Barker, said: “Richard’s appointment is a result of a growing demand from clients – as mindsets shift and attitudes change, there will no doubt be further opportunities which we need to be a position to capitalise on.”
