LG launches mid-range L Series fashion phones

Press release   •   Mar 01, 2012 10:00 GMT

LG has shown that it is targeting as many niches in the mobile market as possible during Mobile World Congress (MWC) this week, with high end handsets like the Optimus 4X HD sitting alongside the latterly announced Optimus L3 and L5 handsets.

The L Series is aimed at the lower end of the market, but with an emphasis on visually striking style, it looks like the fashion conscious but cash strapped younger user will be the key audience for each handset.

The L3 is the smaller of the two, packing in a 3.2 inch touchscreen display, a single core processor clocked at 800Mhz and the Android 2.3 operating system, which will not end up with its own Android 4.0 update.

It features a three megapixel camera and a moderately slim body which is definitely the highlight, thanks to its premium finish and quality construction.

The L3 should be hitting the UK later in the year at a price point of around £125, which will make it perfect for the pay as you go market. It should also be available in a number of different colours and not just the black or white options which were on show during MWC 2012.

The Optimus L5 is a little more impressive from a technical point of view, although it shares the same 800MHz processor as the L3. It has a four inch touchscreen display and Android 4.0 preinstalled, which means it is bang up to date when it comes to software.

Sadly, the display has a limited resolution of 480x320, which means it will not be as crisp or engaging as some of the other mid to low end handsets.

LG has made up for the shortcomings of the Optimus L5 by packaging it in a particularly appealing chassis, which has well defined straight edges, plenty of chrome on the bezel and lots of nice touches, like perforated speaker grills. It looks like a cross between the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the iPhone 4S, which is quite the compliment to pay to a smartphone which will hopefully cost less than £200 when it arrives later in the year.

LG has baked NFC (near field communication) connectivity into the L5 to make it ready for the contactless payment revolution which is bubbling over into the mainstream at the moment, so it should have longevity if chosen by consumers.
