Liberal Democratic Party: A third of poorer 7-year-olds fail to reach writing standard – Laws

Press Release   •   Dec 09, 2009 10:36 GMT

"Only the Liberal Democrats are willing to guarantee the necessary financial support to help the most disadvantaged children," said the Liberal Democrat Shadow Schools Secretary.

Commenting on today’s DCSF figures showing the huge performance gap between rich and poor seven-year-olds, David Laws said:

“Despite more than a decade of announcements, initiatives, promises and pledges, Labour’s Britain is one where a child’s life chances are still closely tied to their social background, with the poorest children lagging far behind the better off.

“It is shocking and totally unacceptable that around a third of poorer seven-year-olds failed to reach an acceptable level for writing.

“Given Labour’s failure and the fact that the Conservatives seem to be prioritising tax cuts for the rich, only the Liberal Democrats are willing to guarantee the necessary financial support to help the most disadvantaged children get a decent start in life.”
