Press Release   •   Sep 20, 2010 12:32 BST

“Liberal Democrats are committed to improving the accountability of government. This is essential if we are to increase public trust.”

Liberal Democrat Autumn Conference today supported a motion calling for greater transparency in Government. The motion proposed better scrutiny of public servants and potential conflicts of interest, as well as the creation of a statutory register of lobbyists.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader, Simon Hughes said:

“Openness and transparency in government are at the heart of a healthy democracy.

“In addition to making information more easily available to the public, we want to throw open the doors of public bodies and ensure that all public servants, like all MPs, are fully held to account.

“We believe in more transparency in how public bodies buy goods and services as well as creating a register of lobbyists.

“Liberal Democrats are committed to improving the accountability of government. This is essential if we are to increase public trust.”
