Liberal Democratic Party: Cameron’s marriage policy staggeringly incoherent says Alexander

“He says he is a defender of marriage, but this is a policy that will punish married couples who both work," said Nick Clegg’s Chief of Staff.

Commenting on David Cameron’s defence of his marriage tax allowance policy today, Danny Alexander said:

“This was a staggeringly incoherent defence from David Cameron of a policy that is blatantly unfair.

“He says he is a defender of marriage, but this is a policy that will punish married couples who both work.

“He admits his tax break won’t convince people to marry or stay together, yet in the middle of an economic crisis he wants to spend billions of pounds just to ‘send a message’.

“He is now even attacking married people who criticise his plan. He should know that people marry for love, not money.

“To really help families, whether married or not, the Liberal Democrats would put hundreds of pounds back in their pockets by overhauling the unfair tax system.”
