Research by the Liberal Democrats has shown that rail operators’ decisions to run a skeleton service on Boxing Day will leave many fans unable to get to see their favourite football team in action.
There will also only be very limited bus services in many areas. The Boxing Day rail timetable means that:
- There will be no trains for Portsmouth fans travelling into London for their game against West Ham or for Chelsea fans trying to get to Birmingham
- There will be no trains for fans from Bolton, Stoke, Everton, Blackburn or Wolverhampton trying to get to their teams’ away fixtures
Commenting, Liberal Democrat Shadow Culture, Media and Sport Secretary, Don Foster said:
“The decisions of rail companies to shut down almost every line on Boxing Day will create a massive transport headache for many football fans.
“Boxing Day football matches are as traditional as turkey and Christmas pudding. Sadly many people’s festive fun will be ruined by the lack of available transport.
“It is ludicrous that the Premier League and the train operators can’t work together to ensure fans are able to get to the games.”
