Liberal Democratic Party: Historic reclaiming of parliamentary sovereignty within reach says Harris

Press Release   •   Feb 22, 2010 11:43 GMT

“It’s absolutely vital for our democracy that Parliament, not the executive, decides what parts of Government bills are debated and voted on," said the Liberal Democrat MP.

Commenting on Harriet Harman’s announcement that she would vote in favour of an amendment that would set up a House Business Committee, which would give Parliament control the business agenda of the House of Commons, Dr Evan Harris, who tabled the amendment, said:

“It’s absolutely vital for our democracy that Parliament, not the executive, decides what parts of Government bills are debated and voted on.

“While the Government will be guaranteed the time it needs to put its proposals to the House, no longer will we have the undemocratic and unedifying sight of swathes of legislation and Government amendments going through on the nod.

“With 128 senior backbenchers, opposition parties and the Government now supporting this amendment, an historic reclaiming of the sovereignty of Parliament over the executive is within reach.”
