Press Release   •   Sep 20, 2010 12:52 BST

“The inquiry must clear up once and for all what knowledge or involvement, if any, the British Government and security services had of the torture of detainees.”

Liberal Democrat Autumn Conference today welcomed the judge-led inquiry into allegations of UK complicity in the improper treatment of detainees in counter-terrorism operations.   It also called for the remit of the inquiry to be clarified.

Commenting, Co-Chair of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Committee on International Affairs, Tim Farron said:
“The abuses of human rights that have taken place in the name of the War on Terror are utterly reprehensible.

“British people have the right to know whether the UK was involved in, or aware of, these abuses. The lack of transparency under the previous Government damaged our reputation at home and around the world.

“The inquiry must clear up once and for all what knowledge or involvement, if any, the British Government and security services had of the torture of detainees.”
