Liberal Democratic Party: Possible next Christmas troops withdrawal should be based on political shift - Davey

Press Release   •   Dec 01, 2009 09:09 GMT

“We need a regional peace process," said the Liberal Democrats Shadow Foreign Secretary.

Commenting on reports that British troops could pull out of Afghanistan by next Christmas, Edward Davey said:

“We all hope that Obama’s new strategy will enable early troop withdrawal but it will have to contain the radical shift in political strategy we have called for.

“We need a regional peace process with a national and local political surge to reconcile and reintegrate much of the Afghan insurgency.

“That might just enabled some troops to be released”
