Liberal Democratic Party: UN torture allegations show damage Labour has done to UK reputation says Davey

Press Release   •   Jan 28, 2010 10:52 GMT

“If the Government is so sure it has nothing to hide, it should allow a judicial inquiry into torture allegations to go ahead," said the Liberal Democrat Shadow Foreign Secretary.

Commenting on the Foreign Office’s rejection of a UN report accusing the UK of involvement in rendition of terror suspects, Edward Davey said:

“The Foreign Office’s denial of any involvement in rendition and torture does not sit easily with their continuing refusal to release documents relating to Binyam Mohamed.

“With allegations of complicity in torture coming on top of the Iraq Inquiry’s revelations, it is painfully clear that Labour has left Britain’s reputation in tatters.

“If the Government is so sure it has nothing to hide, it should allow a judicial inquiry into torture allegations to go ahead.”
