Liberal Democratic Party: Wealthiest would benefit most from Cameron’s marriage tax break – Webb

Press Release   •   Dec 08, 2009 10:18 GMT

“As with most Tory tax policies, the main beneficiaries would be the wealthiest who need it the least," said the Liberal Democrat Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary.

Commenting on David Cameron’s attempt to defend his policy of tax breaks for marriage, Steve Webb said:

“A tax break for marriage would cost billions of pounds and would do nothing for the two in five children in poverty who live in single parent households.

“As with most Tory tax policies, the main beneficiaries would be the wealthiest who need it the least.

“There is no evidence that a tax break for marriage will encourage people to get married or stay married.   Instead, such a policy would cost billions that could be better spent tackling the poverty of all children, whether their parents are married or not.”
