Location, Location, Location – big screen inspiration for holiday destinations

Press release   •   Jul 20, 2016 14:34 BST

To inspire travellers, Expedia has created The World On Screen: a guide bringing together the best film and TV settings around the globe, from breath-taking natural backdrops to iconic cityscapes. Working alongside bloggers from a range of countries, the guide aims to help travellers discover tips for what to see, do, eat and drink in some of the planet’s most beautiful places, including the new cinematic destinations below.

The Legend of Tarzan

Gabonese national parks

The story of Tarzan has been captivating audiences for more than a century, and the latest movie takes us on a cinematic voyage to Gabon. The West African nation holds a great claim to the origin of the story, even having a deity called Tierzum, and the magnificent aerial footage of Gabon's incredible jungles took over six weeks to shoot alone.

If you’re planning to visit Gabon, be sure to factor in a one of their unspoiled national parks. The Iyindo National Park in the heart of the country boasts the Makorou and Kongou Falls – an awe inspiring sight as the Kongou Falls plunges 56 metres into the Iyindo river. Or, head to the south and see Loango National Park, called Africa’s Last Eden and see elephants, buffalo and gorillas by white sand beaches.

Suicide Squad

Toronto, Canada

Suicide Squad is the latest superhero movie on the scene – but there’s a twist. This time, it’s the super villains that get to take centre stage, working with government agencies to execute dangerous black ops missions in exchange for reduced prison sentences.

A significant chunk of the filming took place in Canada’s most populous city, Toronto, with a helicopter crash landing in Bay Street in the Downtown area, while nearby Yonge Street played host to a car chase between the Joker’s hot magenta Lamborghini and the Batmobile itself.

Meanwhile, you may spot Hy’s Steakhouse and Cocktail Bar in the film, where Ben Affleck can be seen at the establishment. Why not walk in the footsteps of Batman and grab a meal and drinks while checking out the set, or visit the nearby Hockey Hall of Fame for an insight into Canadian sporting culture?

London and Skye, UK

A timeless children's favourite given the live action Hollywood treatment by none other than Steven Spielberg, The BFG captures the magic of beloved author Roald Dahl in all his trademark wit, warmth and creativity.

The UK plays host to the film, with the wilder scenery of the “Giant's Land” shot in Scotland around the rugged Isle of Skye. One of the best-known settings is Buckingham Palace and if you’ve never seen the inside, from 23rd July until 2ndOctober, visitors can tour the palace.

If you're keen to be somewhere a little more wild though, the stunning Isle of Skye will introduce you to the wild and wonderful scenery of the Giant's Land shown in the movie. Famed for its charm, seafood and scenery, Skye is an incredible spot to visit and is a 12-hour drive or a swift flight from London airports.

Return flights and four nights stay at 3* Tullochard House in Isle of Skye from £169 per person

Finding Dory

California coastline, USA

While the original Finding Nemo was firmly rooted in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, the sequel sees our aquatic heroes navigate California’s Pacific Coast. The key to the whole plot of the film is getting to The Jewel of Monterey, a location that seems to hold some uncertain memory of Dory’s growing up.

While the computer animated version is beautiful, the Monterey Bay itself has to be seen to be believed. With a number of marine protected conservation areas, the bay is on the migratory path of Gray and Humpback Whales and serves as a setting off point for whale watching by boat. On top of this, you may spot sea otters, harbour seals and bottlenose dolphins in the bay. Failing that, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is one more way to live the life aquatic seen in Finding Dorywithout needing to leave dry land.

Return flights and four nights stay at 4* La Playa Carmel from £1,472 per person – a saving of £817 when booked as a package

Jason Bourne

Tenerife, Spain

With Jason Bourne looking to escape being hunted down by a computer programme, the range of locations taken in by the new Bourne film is enough to satisfy any jet setting spy film buff.

While much of the onscreen action takes place in Greece, the filming itself was shot in Tenerife, one of the Spanish Canary Islands. Protests, flags, graffiti and street signs were produced in Greek style, turning Santa Cruz into Athens.

But once the city turns back into its usual self, it’s well worth checking out before heading off to the beaches of Tenerife. The Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre is one of the best museums in all the Canary Islands and offers a mix of natural science and archaeology, the Sinfonia restaurant offers the best of gourmet Canarian food and it’s worth checking out the trendy Noria District for bars and nightlife in the area.

Return flights and four nights stay at 4* Silken Atlántida Santa Cruz from £299 per person – a saving of £24 when booked as a package
