Love her or hate her Lady Thatcher apart from being the only lady to be the head of government in the UK’s history is a recognisable UK figure who has affirmed her place in our history.

As with many heads of state and political leaders Margaret Thatcher is no exception when it comes to people wanting to dress up as them for parties and events.

The Margaret Thatcher mask is one of the most popular we have available on our website, check out our mask section for inspiration if you are stuck for fancy dress ideas. You may be surprised who you see there!

Well known for her no nonsense straight talking, being immaculately presented at all times and usually seen dressed in a smart suit with her trademark pearl earrings and necklace and not forgetting a handbag poised on her arm.

Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher was born on 13th October 1925. She was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 until 1990. Born in Grantham, Lincolnshire, she studied chemistry at the Somerville College, Oxford before qualifying as a barrister.

In a general election in 1959 she was elected MP for Finchley. Edward Heath the Prime Minister at the time appointed her Secretary of State for Education in his 1970 government. in 1975 she became leader of the Conservative Party. Not only was she the first woman to head a major UK policital party, she became Britain’s first female Prime Minister in the 1979 geberal election.

Following years of firm support, Lady Thatcher’s popularity later sank amid recession and high unemployment, although economic recovery and the 1982 Falklands War brought a resurgence of support and she was re-elected in the 1983 election.

She took a hard line against trade unions, and her tough rhetoric in opposition to the Soviet Union earned her the nickname of the “Iron Lady”. Thatcher was re-elected again for a third term in 1987 but her popularity fell drastically following the introduction of poll tax which was nationally disliked. Following differences of opinions with others in her Cabinet she resigned as Prime Minister and party leader in November 1990.

She holds a life peerage as Baroness Thatcher, of Kesteven in the county of Lincolnshire, which entitles her to sit in the House of Lords.

Her life story is such a fascinating one that it is being retold in a Biopic called “The Iron Lady” on the big screen. Thatcher being played by Meryl Streep is due to hit our screens later this year (2011) and is set to be a huge success with an all star cast.
