Meet Moptimus Prime, the latest recruit to Mitie’s cleaning team

Mitie, the facilities management business, has introduced a state-of-the-art cleaning robot to its cleaning service at Hinchingbrooke Hospital.

The robot cleaner, launched last month, is custom-made for the hospital and in the shape and appearance of an ambulance.

Moptimus Prime uses a mapping system to guide it round the hospital, completing pre-programmed cleaning duties, freeing up staff to focus on more complex tasks. Fitted with a motion sensor, it is able to detect if anyone is in front of it and stop moving.

The robotic scrubber-dryer uses ultraviolet technology to eliminate 99.9 per cent of viruses and bacteria, and its advanced purification and recycling system can save up to 26,000 litres of water and chemicals associated with manually operated auto-scrubbers.

The robot was named via a Twitter poll, with the hospital's social media followers choosing between the names DUST-E, RoboMop, Clean-3P0 and Moptimus Prime.

But 'Moptimus Prime' won a landslide, winning 43 per cent of the vote. DUST-E and RoboMop got 20 per cent each, and Clean-3PO was least popular with just 17 per cent.
